İllüzyonlar yüzyılı–siber ayaklanma–şeylerin yer değiştirmesi / The Century of illusions-cyber riot -displacement of things

The Century of Illusions: Cyber-Riots and the Displacement of Things

A month of rioting in Tunisia came to a climax when 26-year-old Muhammed Buazizi burned himself to death in protest at the confiscation of his stall. Buazizi was a university graduate, but earned his living as a street-seller. Although the ruined dictator Bin Ali – the so-called Iron Fist – was forced to make concessions and then fled the country, the riots continued. Now the fire has spread to Morocco and Jordan.

The arising governmental confusion, the death toll among the protestors reaching currently 80, as will police and army repression, activities on the streets, fire, looting and escapes from prison are all indicators that riots will go on for the moment.

According to some reports in the press, the Tunisian people, who suffered years of oppression following a military coup, have turned to new forms of cyber organising, as online networks like Facebook and Twitter have been used to organise social protest.

At the beginning of the century, we can predict that there will be global revolts against global capitalism. Electronic media, information and technology are becoming increasingly important tools of state power, and are thereby being transformed into forms of power themselves. The use of technology by civil organisations and social networks for the purposes of revolt, and the pursuit of liberation via the net, are natural consequences of this process.

The replacement of real power with virtual power obscures our view of what is true or actual. When we turn upside down the fact to be governed in another space, we can also foment uprisings in that other space. And when the harsh reality of power in Tunisia has finally been eliminated, those who have adapted to the new system and its liberal socio-economic policies, those who have been led away from the uprising by cyberpower and have been living in re-simulated hyperreal grids, will remain.

The uprising in Tunisia and surrounding countries is the remaining balance of the bitter invoice issued by western-centred modernism. Now, in the postmodern period, those who were denied the status of subject in the 20th century are standing up and invoking that century’s spirit of revolt. The current wave of rebellion, spontaneously arising at the start of the 21st century, must be recognised as a rearguard action against the bankrupt politics of the last 300 years. But, today with all its fluidity has filtered into all uprisings from the use of technology by rebels up to the suicides as an act of protest.

Buazizi’s act of suicide recalls other such recent acts. Last month a man attempted to commit suicide by jumping from a balcony at the Romanian parliament during a discussion of measures demanded by the IMF. Joseph Stack committed suicide by flying his plane into an office building. Dicle Koğacıoğlu, a young university lecturer, killed herself in protest at life.

Undoubtedly the act of suicide – the most naked expression of individual destructiveness – and the nihilism that feeds it will ultimately be replaced by spiritual resistance, and will turn from the destruction of the individual to the destruction of society.

The riots will result in these countries in partial democracy, a more liberal outlook, and a more complete adaptation to the global system. Standing in a foggy corner, the 21st century still awaits its own rebels.
And when the boundaries of reality are stretched to infinity, behind the misty clouds the rebels of the future will still be transmitting their dreams, from the depths of surrealism to the damned universe.
